VHCMA Vision
Mike Danielson of M.R.DAN Enviromental Design Group was stuck in St. Louis airport on a beautiful sunny day in July '96. With no where to go he was drawn to a hotel across the highway. It was there where he met George Dousis, a Vietnam veteran, attending the annual Vietnam Helicopter Crew Member reunion and learned of his glorious vision.

His mission is to offer a special place. where people can join together and reflect on the events and symbols of the tragedies of war. Also, to give a home to the spirits that were lost, homage to the living that survived and a story left behind to the young of how horrible war can be.

As an experienced artist and designer, Mike envisioned on this day the image in his mind of a memorial George had described. The Memorial sits below a plush green park with walkways of trees, flowers, plaques and benches. Geometrically placed flag poles are spaced around the upper entrances to this Memorial. Steps and handicap ramps lead down to the 15,000 square foot radius carved out of the ground like a crater. Golden bamboo's and tall grasses line the entrances downward to the fields of geometric rice paddies and water. Finally, the walk proceeds to solid ground resting around the smooth black and gray granite creating a symbolic shadow shape of a helicopter pointing towards South East Asia. Brass plaques inserted in the ground around this granite give identity to the different kinds of helicopters used in Vietnam. The smooth granite holds a projected tail fin and a solid steel mast supports the massive span of the main rotors, each pointing in a compass direction (N, S, E & W). It Is here in the center where the magic of the bronze sculpture of two soldiers is set. The two soldiers rest their bodies against the mast, one reaches down to a golden memorial plaque as the others sure strength guards. The two are dressed in full flight gear as ammunition rests over the one soldiers shoulder as he stands guard against the enemy. The other soldiers hand reaches down in a symbolic gesture, of a hand outstretched to help a soldier in distress. It is this act of will that represents the compassion and fear that is the focus of this Monument.

The Monument
The Vietnam Helicopter Veterans' Memorial is dedicated to the men who served during the Vietnam war. A Memorial comprised of monuments to those who served and a tribute to those who did not return.

It takes time and money to create and construct such a remarkable project. To George Dousis, a Vietnam Veteran, and Michael Danielson, a visionary artist and designer, it seems but a small project in comparison to the intense enormity of the scale of such a war. It is with an Inner vision from the heart that this Monument will come alive. With the spirits of those who died and those who live we can help create a memorial message to all people of all races to the senselessness of war.

Donations from individuals; businesses; organizations; civic groups; municipalities and counties throughout the state will help fund and support this Memorial.

Contributions will be seeked-out and all avenues of advertising will be implemented to gather resources in constructing this monument in an affordable and timely manner.

We salute all the efforts in helping create a lasting message through this unique Monument. And to also raise a higher understanding to all the pain a war will bring.
